Book Review: Air Awakens by Elise Kova

I just finished reading Air Awakens by Elise Kova as the February pick for the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club. I’m going to go ahead and answer the first question you almost certainly have, I have absolutely no idea what’s up with her arm on the book cover.

Air Awakens is a fantasy romance novel featuring Vhalla, a young librarian who learns early in the book that she has undiscovered magical power. She’s heard different stories about the sorcerers, but above all, they’re shrouded in mystery.

In my opinion, this book could have had a bit more depth to it. Vhalla tends to be a fairly vanilla character, and we end up spending a lot of time in her head. When the elemental magic system was introduced, I got some very strong nostalgia for Avatar: The Last Airbender. It turns out that Vhalla is the first Windwalker in a long time, after the Firebearers wiped them out. The story doesn’t draw too many parallels to A:TLA, so it was mostly just a fun nod.

After reading it, I’m honestly surprised this was a pick for a romance novel book club. There was barely anything romantic going on, except for descriptions of Vhalla being attracted to pretty much every guy she came in contact with, and one awkward kiss. From the vivid descriptions, I got the feeling that the author wanted to put more steamy stuff in, but maybe she just wasn’t comfortable doing it, who knows.

The consensus in the book club seems to be that this book isn’t necessarily great on its own, but the story and writing in the rest of the series is good and worth reading through. I don’t plan to continue reading the series right now, but I’ll be keeping the next book on my TBR list just in case I get the itch for a good story about elemental magic in the future.

Overall, I enjoyed this book for what it was, but I probably wouldn’t recommend it except as an introduction to the series.
